My professor actually requested that I also research opium poppy eradication in Afghanistan and the golden triangle. However, poppies aren't used in the same way traditionally, medicinally, and religiously as coca is in Bolivia. I did find that a lot of Afghan farmers faced with complete eradication were sometimes forced into some form of human trafficking. If the plant is going to be eradicated, then the farmers need a substitute in order for them to survive. The income they make outweighs the risk of getting caught.

And I completely agree with you. We should probably start with getting rid of the demand. I could probably kill someone with a spinach leaf if I tried.

PS the "war on drugs" is a hilarious joke.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10748319453928552299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6140648829606654462.post-4560047207698543362011-01-19T16:33:33.476-08:002011-01-19T16:33:33.476-08:00I enjoyed the post. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, but poppies have a similar importance over in Afghanistan, except more of the farms are owned exclusively for heroin production. Seems to me that it would be a lot cheaper, and much more effective, to destroy the market that these drugs work in. Get rid of the demand, and the supply will fail. Just thought I'd weigh in. Thanks for posting. :)Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00905176231643248252noreply@blogger.com
