November 5th is Bonfire night in the UK. Celebrations are held over the failed Gunpowder Plot of Guy Fawkes and are often commemorated with bonfires and fireworks. It's common ritual for an effigy of Guy Fawkes to be burnt on a bonfire and our bonfire night was no different. There's even a little diddy to go with all the festivities. I'm sure you've heard of it...
Remember, remember the 5th of November,
the gunpowder, treason and plot.
I know of no reason
why the Gunpowder Treason
why the Gunpowder Treason
should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent
to blow up the King and Parliament
Three-score barrels of powder below
to prove old England's overthrow;
by God's providence he was catch'd
with a dark lantern and burning match.
Hulloa boys, hulloa boys, let the bells ring.
Hulloa boys, hulloa boys, God save the King.
Now before all of the firey goodness took place we had to collect the neccessary materials. Corey and Paul made our little effigy of Guy Fawkes using a pair of old socks. The boy and our good friend Sarah King (and owner of the pictures I'm about to post) were in charge of foraging for wood. I got a little distracted and instead played pattycake with this wee baby.
Below are the pictures of our first fire that was later upgraded by the boy and his pyro skills. Paul gave us a brief history of Bonfire Night and then the proceedings began. After our burning of Guy Fawkes we switched to Harry Potter roman candle duels (with helmet protection), toasting marshmallows and sausages, and attempting to make words with sparklers.
The night ended with a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to MOI! It was a great night with great people and great fun.
Photo credit to Sarah King and Corey Jolley as I was an idiot and forgot to take my camera.
